Mr. Rob Larbalestier is Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital, and operates at The Mount Private Hospital. He holds a fellowship from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Cardiothoracic surgery and is an associate professor at Murdoch University. He was instrumental in establishing the Western Australian Heart and Lung Transplant service and sits on the board of the WA heart and lung transplant foundation as well as the West Australian Donation advisory Committee.
Cardiac surgery interests:
Heart transplantation and LVAD insertion, Mitral valve repair, minimally invasive mitral valve surgery, aortic valve repair and replacement, heart valve repair, atrial fibrillation surgery, arterial coronary revascularisation, aortic procedures.
Thoracic surgery interests:
All aspects of lung cancer surgery, as well as an active interest in lung transplantation and surgery for emphysema (lung volume reduction surgery). Mr Larbalestier was a pioneer in the introduction of Video assisted thoracic surgery in Perth.
Education and Training:
Mr. Larbelestier obtained his medical degree at Sydney University completed his post graduate training at St Vincent’s hospital in Darlinghurst. He then undertook a fellowship in Cardiothoracic surgery at the Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston, an international leader in the field.
He has undertaken a number of post graduate courses and workshops in advanced surgery for heart valve disease, minimally invasive aortic surgery and minimally invasive mitral valve surgery.
Publications and Speaking:
Mr. Larbalestier is well recognised as an expert in advanced heart and lung surgery, particularly in the fields of end stage heart disease and aortic pathology.
He has presented and lectured extensively in these areas, both in Australia and abroad, and has a long list of publications to his credit. He is regularly asked to be on the faculty for international and local meetings and provides peer review services for a number of international journals. He has a strong interest in developing the new research programme at Fiona Stanley Hospital in conjunction with Murdoch University.
Mr Larbalestier is a member of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons.
When not operating he has a keen interest in swimming and water polo as well as being a patron of both theatre and opera.
